The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
This is from the series “Model Young Women Woven in Mist” and was published from Tsutaya. Utamaro in particular incorporated mosquito nets in his works to create a see-through effect, emphasizing the exquisite features and beautiful complexion of the women he portrayed. By creating a contrast between people on the outside and the inside of the net, he showcased the beauty of the women seen through the mosquito net.
