The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
Utamaro achieved great popularity with his Okubi-e (close-up portraits) prints of beautiful women. In this work, he depicted the woman who is powdering her neck seeing the mirror. Her face can be only seen through the mirror which enhances her beauty even more. To show the powder’s texture, only the area applied powder is printed with white color and the bare skin area is expressed with the paper color itself.
