The Courtesan Hanaogi of Ogiya
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
The courtesan Hanaogi is depicted here in rich colors and with particularly alluring charm, musing before beginning to write a love letter and resting her cheek on her right hand which holds the writing brush. The cartouche at the upper-right indicates the title of this print and includes two fans, an arrow and some flowers.
