Flower Arrangement
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
Having set a chrysanthemum branch beautifully in a vase, a woman is taking a puff on a pipe. The girl beside her, who is going to arrange similar branches in another vase under her instructions, appears to be her younger sister ot daughter. The women have their hair dressed in a style termed toro-bin which was fashionable between the late 1770s and early 1800s.
