The Actor Ichikawa Komazo
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
This print of Ichikawa Komazo is representative of Toyokuni's skills. Komazo was popular as an actor of dramas of contemporary life. He is shown in a striking, firmly planted mie (theatrical pose) holding a hand-mirror in his left hand. The artistic device of using black shading in the upper part of the background helps dramatize the silhouette of the actor.
