The Actor Otani Oniji III as Edobe
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
The actor shown here is Otani Oniji, as he appeared on the stage as Edohei in May 1794. Note the superbly portrayed roguish face of this blackmailer and imposter, but the complete lack of beauty which puts this work outside the generally accepted category of good-looking actors. A typically characteristic Sharaku composition.
