The Actor Ichikawa Ebizo as Takemura Sadanoshin
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
Ichikawa Ebizo is pictured here in the role of Takemura Sadanoshin in the drama "Koi -nyobo Somewake Tazuna". Sharaku here observed the facial traits of the actor and tried exaggerated representation which was bordering on sarcasm. Such penetrationg depiction of personal expression was characteristic of Sharaku.
