The Actor Matsumoto Yonesaburo as Shinobu
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
This print shows the actor Matsumoto Yonesaburo as the courtesan Kewaizaka no Shosho, alias Shinobu, the younger sister of Miyagino, in the play "Katakiuchi Noriai Banashi". Although at first glance this portrait seems rather ordinary, a closer scruitiny reveals many subtle points - including a serious expression in the eyes and a complex pose. There is something vaguely foreboding about this effectively understated portrait.
