Utagawa Kuniyoshi Famous Places in Edo

Shin Yoshiwara

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

Kuniyoshi challenged Western-style of light and shadow expression in this work and depicted the bright night of a full moon. A very unique expression of the moon and its halo requires advanced printing skill. This is a scene of the embankment leading to the red light district, Yoshiwara. He depicted a palanquin with the cover carrying a visitor as a metaphor that this is the path to the Yoshiwara district.
