Utagawa Kunimasa

The Actor Ichikawa danjuro in the title of Shibaraku

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

This work is remarkable for its bold composition and colors. It depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō V. The print shows Danjūrō's ornately painted face in full profile, where it comes into contact with the edge of his red garment sleeve, which is painted with the familiar mimasu crest of three nested squares. The picture suraface is composed of a series of geometrical color planes of different textures and gives us a glimpse of Kunimasa's strikingly modern design sense.
