The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

Kiyochika Kobayashi was born in 1847. His work documents the rapid modernization and Westernization Japan underwent during the Meiji period (1868-1912) and employs a sense of light and shade called kosen-ga inspired by Western art techniques. Kiyochika made his debut at that time and was welcomed with his western style landscapes in woodcut prints. Kiyochika's prints came to reflect the changing landscape of the Meiji Period, the shift from the floating world of Edo to a modern Tokyo.

This print is one of 5 print series, "Celebrated Places of Tokyo". The soft tonality of colors and the reflection of light are very effective and beautiful. His kosen-ga style, "pictures of light" is well shown in this work and also reflected his time, as if emblems of bunmei kaika (West inspired new civilization) after the Edo era(1603-1868).

Adachi offers two optional framing/mounting ways for this work. Please choose one and leave your choice in the remarks column when you place an order.
※If there is no request, we will frame it with our default way, A Type which shows the border and letters.
