Utagawa Hiroshige Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji
The Suruga District in Edo
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
This print is one of Hiroshige’s series, “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji” which was published after the big success of Hokusai’s “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji”. Surugacho area in Hiroshige’s time (Nihonbashi Muromachi area now) was popular as a scenic place for Mt. Fuji in central Tokyo. Hiroshige boldly depicted the storefront of Echigoya (current Mitsukoshi department store) with new year’s decorations as an accompaniment of Mt. Fuji.
