The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
The large eagle in flight in the snowy sky, the snowveiled peak of Mt. Tsukuba in the distance, and the desolate view of Jumantsubo constitute this masterly winter composition. Note the exaggerated perspective of the eagle depicted in detail in the foreground, and the snow scene looming in the background. The small pail floating on the water reflects the life of the common people.
