Utagawa Hiroshige One Hundred Famous Views of Edo
Nihondutsumi Bank at Yoshiwara
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
The half moons high above sheds its silvery light on the bank. Visitors to Yoshiwara brothels, amigasa-jaya (teashops lending deep hats to them for concealing their faces) flanking the road, rice fields beneath the bank, all are wet with moonlight. A flock of wild geese in flight across the moon adds to idyllic mood, which is enhanced furthermore by the cloud printed in atenashi bokashi(gradation) below the moon. Though designed in the traditional bird's-eye view composition, it introduces a modernistic interpretation of light reflecting Hiroshige's alertness to print techniques.
