Komagata Temple by Azumabashi Bridge
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
It is one of the masterpieces of this series. Splendid is a compact arrangement, with a cuckoo flitting in an early summer rain, glittering streaks of rain (with mica inlaid) and a scarlet little flag knitted together.
The artistic craftsmanship of the engraver and the printer of this color work cannot be overlooked.
Mica-setting in the rain and shading in the grey clouds are gone in later prints.
