The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
Rated one of the best works of this series, the picture is of ice-fish netting in winter, one of the attractive sights of Edo. Tsukudajima was at the mouth of the Sumida River which flows through Edo into Edo Bay. Fishermen on the island made it a custom to present ice-fish they caught to the Shogun. The sight of night fishing under a near full moon and twinkling stars, dotted with fires on the boats would make one chilled to the bones.
