Utagawa Hiroshige Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido
Spring Rain at Tsuchiyama
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
In heavy rain, the vanguard of a daimyo's procession, with furled banners, crosses a bridge over a torrent towards a row of houses standing behind trees. This was probably near the Tamura Myojin Shrine, which was located just east of Tsuchiyama. The red and green coats and the yellow mushroom hats provide accents in a color-scheme otherwise predominantly grey.
