Utagawa Hiroshige Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido
White Rain at Shono
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
Shono is now a part of the city of Suzuka. In Hiroshige's time it was only a small station among the mountains, with nothing calling for the traveler's attention except for small bales of dried rice sold as souvenirs. This print is notable for the very natural, unexaggerated representation of the noise of the shower and has been evaluated highly from an aesthetic point of view since the Meiji Period.
