Utagawa Hiroshige Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido
Chiryu -Summer Horse Fair
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
Groups of tethered horses are shown in wide meadows, with long grass in shades of green and yellow. In the middle distance, a tall tree with a group of farmers at its foot, and a few small buildings beyond. In a later state of the print there is a whaleback hill in the background. The summer horse fair was an annual event at Chiryu, but it is no longer held.
