Fuchu -Crossing the Abe Riveru
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
In the right foreground, women travelers are being ｃarried across the ford. At the left, two groups of porters, one with a pack-horse, coming from the opposite shore.
Beyond the further bank of the river, great dark hills stretch away in the distance tｏ the right and left. Fuchu, the old capital of Suruga Province, became Shizuoka City in 1868.
