Utagawa Hiroshige Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido
Ejiri -Distant View of Miho
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
Ejiri is known today as Shimizu, one of the important seaports of Japan. Above the rooftops (bottom foreground) is the bay with many boats. In the middle, low spits of tree-covered ground jut out into the water. Mountains to the left in the distance. This particular design suffers badly in late editions from poor printing from worn blocks. This print, however, recaptures the beauty of the first edition printing.
