The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
The Tempozan set to which this print belongs was probably published in the wake of the poplular "36 Views of Mt. Fuji"set. The surging waves and fine lines depictiong their direction are attractive. Note how realistically the structure of the boat and the shape of its sail swollen with the wind are depicted. The name of the boat "Daito-maru" (Big Wealth Winner )is suggestive of good luck against the threatening clouds above.
