■ "New Year's Eve Foxfires at the Nettle Tree in Oji" by Utagawa Hiroshige

"New Year's Eve Foxfires at the Nettle Tree in Oji" is one of prints from Hiroshige's late series, "One Hundred Famous Places in Edo". Hiroshige depicted a mysterious night scene of Fox's year end worship on December 31st which is based on the myth. The fox is enshrined as a god's messenger in Shinto and the fox statues are commonly seen at the entrance of shrines or Inari in Japan. Also in Japan, it is believed that a fox can be a phantom such as a nine tails' fox. The mysterious atmosphere of the night scene is enhanced with the special printing technique, "Kira-suri" which has a glittering effect using the mica's particles.
